The Monday Chiller 8# - Scrotum Ear Lobe

Oh man, what began as a simple Monday Chiller post about one Datasette song has snowballed into a mountain of information and music that i can't possibly tackle in this post alone. Therefore i'll find a replacement track for today and try to get to grips with this can of worms tomorrow.

All i'll say at this point is that Datassette is my new favourite artist, simply because of this description of his track Eggs of Length:

'A short blast of egg-based nonsense'

Well, there are other reasons I like him too but that is one of the best. Anyone not tantalised by this eggy promise should look elsewhere for musical nourishment.

Here's the song then, Scrotum Ear Lobe by Lucky and Easy, from the album I Would Do Anything For A Dairylea. I have no idea where I got it but it's been on my computer for years and I just remember loving the name, the fact that the tune is good is a bonus. There's nothing like some nice downtempo electronica reminiscent of AFX to ease you into the week.

Lucky and Easy - Scrotum Ear Lobe

I've inspired myself to start creating a post of songs with great names like the two mentioned above, but i'll probably forget by the time i've finished this. Got any suggestions?

Oh yeah and this is my 50th post! Thanks to everyone who visits the site, has linked to me, commented and whatnot. Big up especially to Aidan of Certified Banger who inspired me to start. Here's to the century.

Do You Know Squarepusher?...

I was lucky enough to get hold of the 3" promo CD entitled Square Window included in pre-orders of Squarepusher's 2004 album Ultravisitor from Warp Records online store.

Wheareas Ultravisitor was truly great in places but probably twice as long as it should have been, Square Window is a succint 20 minute blast of vintage Pusher, and for those not in the know, a perfect introduction to the great man. This is one of those posts where you really love what you're posting and hope that someone else will be as in to it as you. Hey, that's what i'm here for anyway. What i especially love about Square Window is it's total mental and musical breakdown. Each track gets progressively more wilfully obscure, until all that's left is bleeps and blips where once was melody and coherent music. Pick of the bunch is Abacus 2, which skips along and has great layers of sound that build and fade away when the next great melody hits. This is Squarepusher at his experimental best.

Tetra-sync

I couldn't do this post without sticking up at least one track from the LP. Tetra-sync is my favourite piece on the album, mainly because my friend Kes pointed out that you can hear the instrumentation switch from live to programmed and then back again, but also because it's a total stomping epic of a tune. Build and release. Build and release.

London etcetera?...

'Stupid people think it's cool, smart people think it's a joke; also cool.'

LDN is a Victim

I got this musical tidbit straight from todays Guardian (ahead of the curve) but the satire on the track is so spot-on i had to post it. Taking a pop at everyone on the London scene from Lily Allen to Just Jack by way of the Audio Bullies and Kate Nash, the song rips on those people who have started to make their careers out of singing in affected southern accents to fit in with the scene. It's a novelty record but i hope the guys behind it are working on some other stuff because this track shows much promise. 'None of that Staars in their Eeeeyyes'. Myspace.

Ratatat - Seventeen Years

The problem I have is that my mp3s are split up into 7 or 8 different folders and as such tracks will get downloaded and then forgotten about. I-tunes could well prove to be the solution but until then i shall enjoy looking through old folders and finding tracks like this one by Ratatat, which i got months ago and filed away in an obscure part of my C drive. Good job i did find it though because it's a bit of a corker.

This tune represents the essence of what Eclectic Hermit started out to provide. Filled with cut-up beats and loping synths, electro-claps and samples, I couldn't want much more from a tune.

AFX - Windowlicker (Run Jeremy's X-rated Lick)

Nicked from the Electric Collective, this track has become part of the staple diet my car radio enjoys. A very original take on the original (?), when the beat switches gears around the two minute mark and a French lady starts mumbling something about '...j'aime faime les croquettes au chique' some serious head-noddage goes down.

Always interesting, this track takes me on a musical journey from Cornwall to the south of France via a Belgian farmhouse producing only the finest Moloko.

Keep it foolish...
